The Alex Rodriguez celebrity doll depicts him at 20 years old as a rookie professional Major League Baseball (MLB) player with the Seattle Mariners. The action figure was made in 1998 by Hasbro (Kenner) as part of its Starting Lineup ’98 Edition of 12 inch dolls.
Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod, had a 22 year career as a short stop and third baseman with the MLB (6 as a Marineer, 4 as a Texas Ranger, and 12 and a New York Yankee) and retired in 2016. He went on to run the A-Rod Corporation, a beer company, and owner of the National Basketball Association team, the Minnesota Timberlakes. He also is a sports broadcaster and reality television personality.
From the box:
In his first full majors, Alex Rodriguez was voted The sporting News Major League Baseball Player of the Year and finished second in MVP balloting. The Seattle Mariners’ shortstop put up some truly eye-opening numbers in ’96: He hit .358 and cracked 54 doubles, both Major League highs; he scored 141 runs and racked up 379 total bases to lead the American League; and his 123 RBIs, 215 hits, .631 slugging percentage and 91 extra base hits placed him among the league leaders in those categories.
Incredibly, his .358 average was the highest by a right-handed hitter in 57 years. His hitting prowess, which included 38 homers, and excellent defensive play earned him election to the All-Star team. At age 20 (just a few weeks shy of his 21st birthday), he was the youngest shortstop ever to play in the midsummer classic.
Rodriguez was a first-round pick of the Mariners in the June 1993 draft. He made his Major League debut in July of ’94 at the age of 18. In ’95, he split the season between Seattle’s top minor league team, Tacoma, and the parent club. As indicated by his phenomenal numbers in ’96, this 22-year-old superstar has more than lived up to his advance billing.
